Stop the press: There’s a hot new double act in town and the result of their unlikely alliance is a quirky trip down memory lane. Heritage jewellery brand Tiffany & Co. has joined forces with iconoclastic Comme des Garçons to produce the limited edition Out of Retirement™ collection – a stonking 18-piece range of jewellery and objects which launches this week at Dover Street Market in London and Tokyo after making a starry debut last week in New York City.

Based on the notion that Tiffany designs are never discontinued, they are simply retired, the collection references 18 karat gold statement pieces from the early 1970s which originally featured in Tiffany’s legendary Blue Book. In the hands of design director Francesca Amfitheatrof these designs have been wittily updated to include a pair of 1973 cuff links re-imagined as block-like diamond studs and an agate and gold bracelet from 1975 converted into gold and rosewood. My personal favourites are the architectural Block and Rectangle rings for their simplicity of line and boldness of form.

The collection is currently showcased in site-specific displays inspired by Gene Moore who designed Tiffany’s legendary windows from 1955 through 1994. In each city, displays are located in transparent vitrines containing custom motifs based on Moore’s favorite props: cast hands in London; sculptural wood figures in New York, and Nymphenburg animals in Ginza. Adding a further twist to the tale, the classic Tiffany Blue Box will make a nod to Dover Street Market by replacing its signature white ribbon with black on all Out of Retirement™ packaging.

In an article with the New York Times’ T Magazine last week, Comme’s president and C.E.O. Adrian Joffe eloquently summed up the ethos of the collaboration: “There has to be a synergy between the two. 1+1 make 3. The thing that’s made together has to be greater than the sum of the parts.”

The Out of Retirement™ holiday collection will be available at Dover Street Market from November 2015 – January 2016.
